Tooth
decay
Tooth
decay occurs when your teeth are frequently exposed to
foods like sugars, candy, cake and even sticky fruits. Cavities
have been identified as a bacterial infection caused by specific
bacteria. Bacteria inhabit the plaque and form up to 500 different
products including acid plaque, which interacts with food
deposits on your teeth and produce "Enamel" and "dentin" which
are the main factors to cause tooth decay.
Enamel
The
larger portion of a tooth that is visible is covered by enamel.
The tooth enamel is the hardest tissue found in the human
body. Enamel is over 95% mineral in composition of hydroxyapatite,
which contain high amount of calcium. Enamel is the main factor
for tooth decay.
Dentin
The
tooth is not the solid enamel. Only the portion of a tooth
that lies above the gum line is covered by enamel. The bulk
of a tooth, both its root and inner aspects, is composed of
another calcified material called dentin.
