Tooth decay

Tooth decay occurs when your teeth are frequently exposed to foods like sugars, candy, cake and even sticky fruits. Cavities have been identified as a bacterial infection caused by specific bacteria. Bacteria inhabit the plaque and form up to 500 different products including acid plaque, which interacts with food deposits on your teeth and produce "Enamel" and "dentin" which are the main factors to cause tooth decay.

Enamel

The larger portion of a tooth that is visible is covered by enamel. The tooth enamel is the hardest tissue found in the human body. Enamel is over 95% mineral in composition of hydroxyapatite, which contain high amount of calcium. Enamel is the main factor for tooth decay.

Dentin

The tooth is not the solid enamel. Only the portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line is covered by enamel. The bulk of a tooth, both its root and inner aspects, is composed of another calcified material called dentin.

Treatment for tooth decay

Treatment for tooth decay involves five simple steps:

  • Brush your teeth, tongue, and gums twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste.

  • Floss your teeth daily with the proper way so that the entire food debris between the teeth and some other organisms get out easily.

  • Make sure you get well-balanced diet and decrease sugary, oily, spicy and creamy snacks.

  • Always make a regular visit to your dentist for check up and cleansing purpose.
  • Schedule for dental cleanings and examinations for your tooth decay.
